I was once working at a salon where I was a victim of this type of behavior. Another stylist told the front desk that I said they were"stealing tips". I hadn't said this and this did not go over well!! I was left for weeks with only mens haircuts and shampoo sets. The worst commission appointments. I finally had to bring this to the attention of management.
People were making 30% more than I was because of this lie. This was in a hotel salon. In case you wondering why I might feel entitled to up-do's and women's haircuts. We were supposed to have "balanced" books. We really only had walk-in traffic and a few regulars.
These books weren't only UNbalanced but this was stealing. It would have been no different than if they had just gone into my purse and stolen money out of my wallet.
This same salon had a big problem. Stylists would buy things for reception staff and give them money for booking them clients. This is NOT ok. Management should really pay attention to the books and look for unfairness. Blatant unfairness.
The problem I had was that the management (one person) was off 2 of the 4 days I worked. That is tough when you are swimming with sharks!! You really need a life-guard to make sure you don't get attacked and drown.
indeed the beauty business can be an emotional rollercoaster!at its core, theres a wonderful opportunity to do something for a living that can make people feel soooo good!sadly, its also a business that if you dont have extemely thick skin when you start, you sure will the longer you do it!!there are so many people looking to take the joy out of it in many different ways! and each individual struggles with their own versions of these attacks.
ReplyDeletebad(or even worse dishonest)receptionists, inept or unqualified management can make your life a living hell! mainly due to the fact that theres often very little you can do about it?
other co-workers that are either cut throat or spiteful. or even flat out resentful that you are even there? now that is were the thick skin comes in! knowing that these terrible traits say everything about them! and nothing about you!can be a tough philosophy when your living or livelihood is at stake?
i wnet to work in a very high class salon some time ago. it was a large staff! almost everyone looked at me as if i were an intruder in their own home! now some pretended to be nice to my face.some flat out were clear how they felt! and some even felt the need to go out of their way to lash out at me! to this day i couldnt tell you which of these people were worse? and this is starting a job im talking about. not doing a nickel in the state penn?
fortunatly karma and perserverance can get you thru it. but for some? it can be simply to much to cope with for just money?
and this is all before youve even dealt with your first client! now they are a whole other story for another day!!!!! stay tuned!
